This study aimed to determine the effect of fluconazole (Diflucan) on the clinical efficacy of fluconazole (Diflucan) therapy in patients with candidiasis. A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study was conducted in 34 patients with candidiasis who were treated with fluconazole (Diflucan) (200 mg twice daily). The patients were divided into 2 groups (oral and topical) in order to determine the effect of oral fluconazole (500 mg twice daily) on the clinical response to the treatment. The oral group received oral fluconazole (500 mg twice daily) for 7 days.
The clinical response was evaluated using the following questionnaires: the Clinical Global Impressions for Severity of Illness (CGI-SID), Global Assessment of Severity of Illness (GASPI), Global Assessment of Severity of Illness in the Global Burden (GASD), and Global Assessment of Severity of Illness in the Global Burden (GAD) questionnaire. A statistically significant reduction of the oral group in all of the 3 measures was observed, except the global assessment of severity of infection in the oral group (P = 0.03). However, the topical group did not show any significant effect of fluconazole (P = 0.07), or the topical group was able to demonstrate the effect of fluconazole (P = 0.07) on the clinical response.
The oral group showed a statistically significant reduction in the clinical response in all the 3 measures (CGI-SID, GASPI, and GASD) (P = 0.03). The topical group showed no significant effect of fluconazole (P = 0.08), or the topical group was able to demonstrate the effect of fluconazole (P = 0.07) on the clinical response.
The findings of this study were consistent with the findings of the previous study in which no significant difference in the clinical response was observed between the oral and topical groups in terms of the duration of treatment and the overall duration of the treatment.
